形态特征
最大背甲长（SCL）雄性27.5 cm，雌性54.0 cm。头部吻端无条纹图案，因此得名calvatus（意为“秃的”）。背甲呈橄榄色至棕色，幼体具斑点，成体模糊。腹甲白色或奶油色。四肢具蹼，前足内侧有爪。包含6个亚种，如指名亚种（A. s. spinifera）等。
生态习性
典型水生龟类，栖息于流速缓慢的河流、湖泊、池塘和水库。日行性，常在水底沙泥中潜伏捕食。食性偏肉食性，以鱼类、甲壳类、软体动物、昆虫及两栖类为食。繁殖期在春季，雌龟在沙岸产卵，每窝10-30枚。
主要威胁与保护
主要威胁包括栖息地丧失、水污染、道路致死及被捕捞用于宠物贸易或食用。但在大部分分布区内种群较为稳定。CITES附录Ⅱ管控国际贸易，各州有相应保护法规。
自然分布与保护状态
分布于加拿大（安大略、魁北克）、墨西哥（奇瓦瓦、科阿韦拉等）及美国大部分州。引入至墨西哥（下加利福尼亚、索诺拉等）和美国（亚利桑那、加利福尼亚等）。IUCN红色名录评估为无危（LC），CITES附录Ⅱ。历史原生范围AOO约1,770,022 km²，EOO约6,550,365 km²。
